| 1940-48 | Attends the University of South Carolina, Columbia, for three semesters | |
| 1949-51 | Enrols in commercial art school in New York City, but leaves after two semesters. Drafted into the US Army - stationed in Japan for last six months of service | |
| 1952-55 | Meets Robert Rauschenberg and works with him on window displays. Meets John Cage and Merce Cunningham. Decides he is an artist. Paints the first Flag and Target painting | |
| 1958 | First solo exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, showing the first Flag, Target and Number paintings | |
| 1960 | Made the two Painted Bronze Sculptures of Ballantine Ale cans and the Savarin coffee can with paintbrushes | |
| 1964 | Retrospective at Jewish Museum, New York; travels to Whitechapel Gallery, London. Visits Japan | |
