Founded in 1991 by the renowned French contemporary artist Gérard Garouste and his wife, interior designer Élizabeth Garouste, La Source Garouste is dedicated to empowering disadvantaged children and driving social change through the transformative power of art.

Gérard rejects the notion of "art for art’s sake," believing artists bear a profound social responsibility. This conviction stems from a childhood experience in Burgundy, living alongside children under social welfare. Through La Source, he champions art's power to bridge communication gaps, allowing adults to look beyond superficial words to uncover a child's true desires and build meaningful relationships.

The catalyst came during a harsh winter in a rural Normandy village, where the couple helped a destitute family. Noticing local children wandering aimlessly, entirely cut off from cultural opportunities, the founders drew upon their own inspiring childhood encounters with practicing artists. They took a leap of faith to establish La Source Garouste from the ground up to fill this cultural void.

At the heart of La Source Garouste are immersive workshops led by professional artists working in tandem with educational experts. Targeting children aged 6 to 18, these 20-hour programs run during school vacations (four hours daily, Monday to Friday). On Friday afternoons, parents are invited to celebrate their children’s achievements, fostering a deep sense of pride and community.

The broad curriculum spans contemporary creativity—from photography and filmmaking to theater and digital illustration. Working on equal footing with professionals, children experience a profound "encounter with the authentic." Free from the pressure of school grades, this environment stimulates their sensibilities and instills a deep sense of accomplishment.

Margaux Taleux, a ceramist and visual artist teaching sculpture here, beautifully captures this philosophy, encouraging children to embrace mistakes: “Failure is part of the process... never be afraid to start over.” Through these workshops, artists impart the richness of encountering others and the joy of creative expression.

In 2024, after three decades of growth, the founders' son, Guillaume Garouste, became Director General to manage organizational scaling. Leveraging his extensive background in cultural events for the association, Guillaume has successfully modernized and professionalized the organization, bringing in a new generation of talent to sustain its vital mission.

Today, La Source Garouste operates 10 centers across France, implementing roughly 370 projects annually. Supported by a network of 200 professional artists, the association empowers nearly 10,000 children each year.
